Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips believes Danny Boyle missed a unique opportunity for a mass dance piece
at the Olympic opening ceremony.
Choreographer Arlene Philips believes Danny Boyle missed a unique opportunity for a mass dance routine at the Olympic opening ceremony.
The former West End choreographer said organisers missed the chance to include a huge "Busby Berkeley"-style dance segment, which would have been “heart-stopping”.
Speaking as she attended a reception celebrating British music, film, art and entertainment, she said:
“It’s the only opportunity at those ceremonies to have everybody doing the same thing at the same time.
"Jamie Bell could have led a tap routine with 2,000 people and no one would have seen anything like it,” she added.
Having watched the ceremony on TV, Philips admits that the camera shots, which often focused on quite small moments, may have detracted from the ceremony’s impact as a mass spectacle.
Boyle’s ceremony, which involved 10,000 volunteers and attracted 27 million UK viewers, has received mostly glowing reviews.
Despite her disappointment with the lack of a huge dance performance, Phillips was not without praise for the ceremony:
“I thought it was great – it was the people’s ceremony and I think they got it right”.
