Indonesia’s First Lady Ani Yudhoyono has undergone successful neck surgery at a US hospital and is ready to accompany President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on his upcoming Latin America tour.
Ani left Jakarta on Tuesday to undergo surgery at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to treat a nerve problem in her neck.
Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said on Saturday that the surgery was performed at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Pittsburgh time (Friday evening in Jakarta), and that it was successful.
“The surgery went smoothly. The first lady is currently having a rest,” Julian said in a text message as he and the president’s entourage headed for the US, during a stopover in the Hague, the Netherlands.
Yudhoyono, who left Jakarta on Friday, said earlier that he would pick Ani up post-surgery, before they headed together to Latin America, where Yudhoyono is set to attend the G-20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, and the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro. Yudhoyono will also sit down for a bilateral meeting with his Ecuadorian counterpart in Quito, Ecuador.
Julian said the president was expected to arrive in Pittsburgh on Saturday evening, Indonesia time.
“And then the first lady will join the [president’s] entourage on the trip to Mexico.”
The entourage is expected to arrive back in Jakarta on June 26.
This is the third time Ani has been admitted to the hospital in the past seven months. In late 2011, the first lady was admitted to Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Jakarta with typhoid fever. In March, Ani was back at the same hospital to have her gallbladder removed.
The team had recommended that Ani undergo the surgery in the Pittsburgh hospital, due to its reputation for treating nerve problems.
