Breaking: Another Flare-Up at Bali Prison Draws Police Fire

Written by News Desk-Jakartaglobe

Indonesian security forces fired on Bali’s Kerobokan prison on Wednesday night just hours after police announced they had taken control of the building after a fiery riot by inmates.

At around 10:15 p.m., inmates of the overcrowded prison threw rocks and molotov cocktails at officers guarding the scene, according to a reporter.

Police and military responded by opening fire on the prison. Sporadic shooting could still be heard an hour later.

Prisoners could be heard demanding the release of three inmates who were shot and arrested earlier on Wednesday when 100 heavily armed police and military stormed the jail on the holiday island, firing volleys of rubber bullets.

Access to the area has been closed and police are preparing to launch tear gas canisters at the prison.

Up to 1,000 armed security forces backed by armored vehicles and water cannon were stationed early Wednesday outside the jail, which is in a suburban area of Bali seven kilometers from the tourism hub of Kuta beach.
