A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted West Southeast Maluku (MTB) district`s capital Saumlaki at 9.56 local time on Friday morning.

Ambon`s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Benny Sipolo said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.75 degrees southern latitude and 130.17 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 85 km under the sea level, and 186 Km northwest of Saumlaki.

Speaking after a coordination meeting with West South Maluku district officials, Sipolo said the earthquake did not trigger tsunami nor were there any casualties and material damage.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Earlier, on Wednesday, BMKG reported that another earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale had shaken Keawkwa, Papua Province, at 11.53 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).

The quake`s epicenter was located at 5.38 degrees southern latitude, and 136.67 degrees eastern longitude, around 72 km southeast of Keawkwa, and at a depth of 270 km.

In the same day at 7.50 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB), East Nusa Tenggara province was also rocked by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake which was also felt by the people in Dili, Timor Leste.
